North Yorkshire Moors Meet

North Yorkshire Moors Meet – Thursday 7th September to Monday Morning 11th September 2017
From Vince and Christine - vince@plusnet3354.plus.com
This meet follows the 2015 Yorkshire Dales Meet, this time moving east to the North Yorkshire Moors and the little market town of Pickering. Billy and Ingrid will be arranging a follow-up meet at York, 11th September to Friday morning 15th September. (Those details will follow shortly)
Our grassy site is regularly used by the big clubs for rallies. There are waste disposal facilities and fresh water but not hook-up, toilets or showers. It is very private and secluded, just a few minutes from the town and we have exclusive use. Pickering itself has good facilities with a range of restaurants and pubs and provisional arrangements have been made for a group meal and the use of a meeting room. There is a decent bus service from Pickering with easy access to Scarborough, ‘the original seaside resort’, the picture postcard village of Thornton-le-Dale, Helmsley, Flamingoland, or the Eden Camp war museum near Malton. There are many other options and also lots of walking opportunities.
The site is even closer to Pickering station, the terminus for the North Yorkshire Moors Railway which claims to be the busiest heritage railway in the world. Steam trains travel over the moors to Grosmont from where they pick up the Network Rail link to the railway’s own platform at Whitby. Our visit would not be complete without travelling this 20 mile scenic route and enjoying that world famous fish and chip lunch/tea in Captain Cook’s ‘home’ town.
En route we can hop off the train at the moorland village of Goathland, famous as the location for the ITV police series ‘Heartbeat’. Goathland offers plenty of options for refreshments, or walks to suit all inclinations.
Goathland station, restored to its 1950’s appearance, has fame in its own right as ‘Hogsmeade’ in the first Harry Potter film.
Enthusiasts may also wish to break their journey at Grosmont and walk through the world’s first railway tunnel to the locomotive engineering works and viewing areas. Non-enthusiasts may like to visit the quaint tearoom housed in the old school!
On another day we can again catch the train and request it to stop at the beautifully remote station halt in Newtondale. There will be a guided walk up on to the moors to enjoy a picnic at a spectacular viewpoint before descending to Levisham station for our return to Pickering. (About 6 miles with just one moderate climb)
To book, just let me know which nights you wish to be with us. Fees are £7.50 per night and will be collected at the meet. If you wish to arrive earlier there is a 5 van site in the next field but early booking is essential. (Details available)
Further details will be sent out in March/April but early booking would be appreciated and would help with planning.
