A Montage of Geoff and Carol Wilkinson’s European Trip
Germany: Freudenstadt, Triberg, Schiltach, Schonach and the Black Forest. You can camp by the sports centre in Schonach for €7. You get a free local travel pass. Freudenstadt and Schiltach are a must.
Switzerland: around Bodensee (Lake Constance). You can park overnight (€15) on Dobeleplatz in the centre of Konstanz (N 47.65845 E 9.16958). Explore the environs by taking a ferry across the lake from Konstanz (Switzerland) to Meersburg (Germany).
Austria: Grossglockner High Alpine Road. At 3,798m the Grossglockner is not only the highest mountain in Austria, it also counts among the highest peaks in the Alps. Be sure to check that the pass is open before you go, and plan to stop en-route to take in the views.
Austria: Heiligenblut. At the foot of Grossglockner . Chill in the square overlooking the picturesque church of St Vinzenz. Sample the local walks to Kleiner Fleisstal and Grossnitzfall.
Slovenia: around Lake Bohinj. Camp at Bohinjska Bistrica; check out the newly-built cycle trails, hire a Canadian canoe or take the (cheap) cable car up to the summit of Mt Vogel.
Croatia: the island of Krk is linked to the mainland by a bridge. Camp at Glavotock by the shore of the Adriatic. Just chill, walk from the campsite - or take a short trip to medieval town of Krk (the town and the island share the same name).
Italy: Venice. Camp at Al Bateo Agricampeggio (N 45.44245 E 12.42142 ) on Punta Sabbioni (€25). Convenient for vaporetto (water taxi) to St Mark’s Square (20 mins). Fantastic.
Italy: around Lago d’Iseo and Monte Isola. Camp at Riva di San Pietro, Marone. Take the ferry to Monte Isola – it may be Italy’s largest island within a lake, but you can walk around it in an afternoon. If you like walking, visit the Pirimidi di Zone.
Switzerland: Zermatt. Camp at Camping Randa Attermenzen, between Randa and Täsch. Take the local bus to Zermatt. Wonder at and wander around the Matterhorn.
France: Burgundy. Camp at the municipal campsite in Beaune. Visit the spectacular Hotel Dieu. Sample some degustación at the local vineyards. Check out the wonderful aire at Marieul Sur Ay – great for a visit to Epernay and Champagne country.
Norway. These pictures were taken on a Hurtegruten cruise in November 2012 – in search of the Northern Lights. They show Trondheim, Honningsvag, Tromso and the Kjeungskjær Lighthouse. The little globe on the rock is the arctic circle.
